Benefits of Using a Firewood Rack

With today's high energy costs people are searching for cheaper sources for heating their homes.  Many are resorting back to the heating choice of their grandfathers...burning firewood.  Using firewood as a heating source is not like it was in the past.  Wood burning stoves today have improved the burning efficiency of firewood helping it to burn longer and produce more heat.  As a result, sales and installation of wood burning stoves have increased over the years.

Along with the increase of sales of wood burning stoves there has also been an increase in sales of firewood racks .  Some people may say "I can see the need for a stove; but why do I need a firewood rack also? Can't I just put the wood on the ground?"  The answer is yes you can just put the wood on the ground.  However, that is not very smart for several reasons. To explain my answer I am going to talk about some of the benefits of stacking firewood in a rack as opposed to just putting it on the ground.

1) Firewood stacked off the ground in a firewood rack does not attract termites.

Placing wood on the ground can attract termites.  This is true regardless if you just pile the wood on the ground or up or stack it neatly.  If wood is laying on the ground...termites will find it.  I am amazed at how many times I've have seen firewood stacked on the ground next to a house.  This is asking for trouble.  To be clear...you don't want your firewood on the ground anywhere near your home.  Be smart...use a firewood rack!

2) Firewood stacked in a firewood rack does not attract rodents and snakes. 

Rodents consider firewood piled on the ground a fine place to make a home.  Snakes consider rodents a fine meal.  If you pile your firewood on the ground you will attract rodents and then snakes...period.  Firewood piled on the ground creates pockets and tunnels where rodents feel safe and protected. By using a rack where the firewood is stacked neatly and where all of the firewood is exposed you do not create this condition.  Don't place your children in danger of being bitten by a snake.  Be smart...use a firewood rack!

3) Firewood stacked in a firewood rack cures faster, stays drier and lasts longer.

The best way to cure green firewood is to allow the sun and air to get to it.  You can't accomplish this when you pile your firewood on the ground where most of the wood is covered up.  In addition, piling wood on the ground creates a condition where the wood actually holds ground moisture.  Exposure to moisture for long periods of time will cause to wood to mold and eventually rot.  By stacking wood in a wood rack getting it off the ground away from ground moisture and allowing the sun and air to get to it will solve this problem.  Be smart...use a firewood rack!

4) Firewood stacked in a firewood rack look nicer than stacked or piled on the ground.

If you care about how nice the exterior of your house and yard looks then you will want to use a firewood rack.   Wood neatly stacked in a wood rack looks so much better than wood just stacked or piled on the ground.  Using a wood rack to store your wood makes a positive statement about you to the neighborhood.  I don't feel I need to explain it this any further.   Project a positive image about yourself...use a firewood rack!

These are just a few of the reasons it is smart to use a firewood rack.  Amazing that using such a simple and inexpensive device can help create safety, eliminate waste, and project a positive image about you and your family.  So if you are using firewood to help heat your home, get a firewood rack to store your firewood.  You will feel good about your choice when you experience first hand the many benefits.
